Adron Medlan Turner


Adron Medlan Turner, who was born Feb. 2, 1894 in Glenrose, Texas, Summerville County died this morning. He was born to Samuel Esan and Serena Adaline Turner. He was the last of 11 children. The children were Lela Oquilla, George Wade, Moten, Sara Elizabeth (Lizzie), Carol (Carl), Polk, Alma, Celestia (Tudy), Cornelia (Bug), Adron Medlan and Alford Willis.

Turner was married to Johnie Viola Downer in Sayer, Okla., Jan. 9, 1932. Their children were Adron Neal born Sept. 16 1932; Adrienne Joyce Turner (Taylor) and husband, Ben now living in Portales; Alan Merle, born Jan. 3, 1936 and died Sept. 2, 1942; and Terry Lynn Turner and wife, Ja Nell, now living in Las Cruces.


Grandchildren are Kelly Jane and Ron Adron Turner and Alan Lynn and Karan Elaine Taylor.

Turner came to Portales when he was five years old. He moved to Yeso for a time with his family. When his father became ill, the family moved to Graham, Texas, to be with his mother's family. After his father died when Turner was 21, he rode a horse and buggy back to Yeso where he planned to homestead. The trip took 15 days.

In 1918 he was called into the Army and spent eight months and eight days in San Antonio, Texas, before the war ended. He was in the machine gun battalion. After he left the service, he came to New Mexico to complete his dream of homesteading. He homesteaded at Ramon and had a 40 section ranch when he sold out in 1947 and moved to Portales here he lived and farmed until his death.

He attended the First Baptist Church and was a member of the WWl Barracks.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Herbert Bergstrom officiating. Burial Will be in the Portales Cemetery.


Pallbearers will be Douglas Stone, Glenn Ezell, Walter McGuire, Weldon Jones, Vonnie Jasper and Fred Stephens. Honorary pallbearers will be all friends.
