A Story About Papa Downer Relayed To Adrienne By Pat Downer (2004)

Papa Downer was noted for being straight-laced and being opposed to profanity, card playing and interracial marriage. His brothers gave him the nickname, ”Jane” which they used behind his back. No one knows why his brothers chose this nickname.

Another nickname was ”Potato Man” given to him because he sold potatoes at his fruit stand. I never saw him drive a vehicle, but Pat said that he drove his truck to pick up potatoes for sale at his table at a farmer’s market. His brothers were visiting him at his fruit stand in Houston and were shocked when he asked them “Do you guys want to go get a beer?” They thought he would be the last person on earth to drink a beer. (I think one of his brothers owned a bar in Texola, Oklahoma.) Papa Downer loved to twiddle his thumbs, he would sit for long periods of time and twiddle his thumbs in one direction, and then he would stop and reverse the direction.
