<Johnie Allene Cox November 5, 2004 San Angelo – Johnie Allene Cox, our wonderful Mother and Granny went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday morning, Nov. 2, 2004. She was 89 years of age. She was born one of eight children on Jan. 26, 1915, in Godley, Texas, to Johnie and James Berry. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 68 years, Mel Cox. Johnie was part of that “Greatest Generation,” and contributed to the war effort in the ‘40s as a Lockheed Aircraft “Rosie the Riveter.” Johnie and Mel lived in San Juan in the Rio Grande Valley for 50 years, where she retired as an employee of Southwestern Bell. They moved to San Angelo in 1991. Johnie worked as a Baptist Memorials Hospital Volunteer for many years. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she loved being a part of the Melody Makers. Survivors include her daughter, Betty Lou Smith and husband Carlton of San Angelo, her son. Leon Cox and wife Margaret of Kerrville; seven grandchildren, Su-z Kleinhans and husband David Odem, Buddy Smith of New York City, Kay Graves and husband Perry of Rankin, Jeff Smith and wife Kelly of Abilene, Caren Miller and husband Ray of Baytown, Drew Cox and wife Faye of Sonora, and Scott Cox and wife Linda of Fort Worth; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a. m. Monday, Nov. 8, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Fairmont Cemetery. The Rev. Scott Cox, grandson and pastor of Ridglea Baptist Church of Fort Worth, will conduct the memorial celebration. Thank you, Mother, for five generations of love.>
