Ralph,

Thanks so much for The Flour Sack poem.  That poem sure brought back a lot of memories!!!  Mother, Dad, Terry & I were with Aunt Lizzie the day that she passed away.  Terry & I sat outdoors on the little front porch of the old Miller Hospital to wait as children weren't allowed in the Emergency Room.  Mother and Dad were with her when she passed away. A sad day for all of us.   Aunt Lizzie had been in the process of building a new outdoor structure....(I believe a new chicken house)....and "running" concrete for the new foundation when she had a stroke.  What a talented woman she was!!!  An architect & construction builder...... designer & seamstress (she didn't need a pattern to go by)....gardener & livestock owner.....canning expert and wonderful cook...   philanthropist..... (giving to and caring for children at the Baptist Children's Home.)....midwife/nurse....(She and Grandma Turner assisted Mother when I was born out on the ranch....Daddy had driven into Vaughn to get the Doctor; but, he was at a baseball game so I was born without a Doctor).   And, as you mentioned, dedicated to family...... wanting to be with and help her family when she could.  She really loved you and Gloria and was very proud of you.

Aunt Lizzie made all my clothes and even my coats when we were on the ranch.  I think Terry sent you his web site with all our old back and white family photos so when you look through those you'll see some of her fashion designs.  One hat that I loved then....but, laugh at now, is a "pointy" looking "clown" hat that she made so my "head & ears would be warm and I wouldn't catch cold."

Remember the quilt tops that Aunt Lizzie had put together but never had time to finish quilting??  I gave them to you when you visited us once.   Anyway, those were probably mostly from flour sack "scraps" don't you think ?  A lot of my school clothes were "flour sack dresses" when  we moved to Portales.  I was in the 9th grade by then and begged Mother to buy me a "store bought" dress.  So she finally took me to Penny's down on the Square.  None of the dresses fit as they didn't have my size...

I searched through my antique chest of drawers and found some old flour sack cup towels that I had saved from the Old Days when Mother was teaching me how to embroider.  We had to laugh at some of the designs.   Remember the Sunday, Monday, Tues cup towels ?

Thanks for sharing your memories with us.....

Give us a "word" when you can......

Love you both,

Adrienne
